INTRODUCING THE RECYCLED BRICK:
So here's a little gem in the world of recycling—introducing the cleverly crafted Recycled Brick. The brainchild of the collaborative efforts between the British non-profit ‘Recycle Rebuild’ and the innovative Dutch company ‘Precious Plastics,’ this quirky building block is made entirely from 100% recycled plastics. Yes, you heard that right—no trees were harmed in the making of this brick!
Now, before you start picturing some flimsy piece of plastic barely holding together, let me assure you, that these bricks are tough cookies. To strike the perfect balance between strength and affordability, the designers opted for a hollow interior. And guess what? This hollow bit isn’t just for show! It also provides pretty decent heat insulation. Who knew the humble air pocket could double as a thermal blanket, right?
And get this—the design of these recycled bricks bears a striking resemblance to our beloved Lego bricks from childhood (or, let's be honest, adulthood for some of us still!). So, not only are they functional, but they also tug at our nostalgic heartstrings.
But wait, there's more! Since this whole shebang relies on generous donations, they're all about sharing the love. They've made the building plan for whipping up your own plastic bricks available on their website. You can dive into your own DIY adventure, crafting toilet buildings for festivals or maybe even cobbling together a bicycle shed—the possibilities are endless, and you get to feel like an eco-friendly Bob the Builder.
So here’s a toast to Recycle Rebuild and Precious Plastics for bringing both sustainability and a bit of fun into the world of construction!
Green Paths and Green Talent?
Having recently read the article "Green Paths for the Automotive and Transportation Industries and Their Challenges," I learned that the automotive and transportation sectors are among the largest contributors to environmental degradation. For instance, the World Economic Forum noted that approximately 80 million vehicles are produced annually, requiring 112 million tons of materials. Additionally, CO2 emissions from transport represent nearly one-fifth of global carbon dioxide emissions, with road travel contributing three-quarters of total transport emissions.
However, there is a promising shift toward greener practices within these industries, driven by both public pressure and evolving legal norms. Here are some key developments and challenges:
1. Sustainable Supply Chains: Many car manufacturers are implementing initiatives to promote sustainability in their supply chains. This includes reducing vehicle weight, improving EV battery longevity, and enhancing the efficiency of conventional engines. For example, companies like Tesla are powering their factories with renewable energy, and BMW is adopting a closed-loop approach for battery production to mitigate environmental impacts. However, the industry still faces challenges due to a lack of standardised frameworks and performance indicators.
2. Circular Economy and Carbon Offsetting: The concept of a circular economy is gaining traction, with automakers like BMW Brilliance Automotive reusing raw and rejected battery materials to create new battery cells. Additionally, car manufacturers are investing in carbon offset credits to counterbalance the emissions from their manufacturing processes. Despite these efforts, the need for comprehensive metrics and unified standards remains critical for simplifying reporting and accelerating sustainability initiatives.
3. Demand for Green Talent: There is a significant demand for skills related to sustainability across various industries, particularly in energy, IT, finance, and transportation. A survey by ManpowerGroup revealed that 70% of employers are looking to hire individuals with green skills to support the transition to more sustainable practices.
As these industries adapt to ecological solutions, they not only help protect the environment but also create opportunities for innovation and business growth.
I found the concept of “Green Talent” very interesting…a glimmer of hope maybe? What are your thoughts, ping me a message!
OMG! It’s Mosquito Season Again…Well In Many Places I am Sure…
Ever Wondered Why Mosquitoes Love You: Things That Attract Mosquitoes
Ever wondered why you are the chosen one when it comes to mosquito bites, while your friend beside you remains blissfully unbothered? Whether you’re in the woods, camping, or just enjoying your backyard, it's always the same story. Let's dive into why mosquitoes seem to love some people more than others.
What Attracts Mosquitoes?
Avoid these mosquito magnets:
1. Dark Colours
Wearing dark clothes is like rolling out the red carpet for mosquitoes. They can easily spot you in the shade or amidst foliage because dark colours stand out. So, if you look like you’re dressed for a gothic summer festival, don’t be surprised if mosquitoes RSVP too!
Tip: Opt for light-coloured clothing like whites, pastels, or khakis. You might not look like a high-fashion model, but at least you’ll be less of a mosquito buffet.
2. Fragrances
Yes, your perfume smells delightful to mosquitoes too. Cologne, scented shampoos, lotions, and detergents are basically mosquito invitations.
Tip: Switch to unscented products during mosquito season. Think of it as going au naturel for a good cause—fewer itchy bumps!
3. Movement
Mosquitoes are like that one friend who always notices when you have snacks. They can detect changes in light and movement from up to 30 feet away. So, if you’re swatting at them, you’re basically waving hello!
Tip: Try to move slowly and steadily. Channel your inner ninja—quiet, stealthy, and unassuming—or just hope your dance moves scare them away.
4. Sweat
Sweat makes you a mosquito magnet because it increases humidity around your body. Plus, it dilutes any repellents you’ve applied, making them less effective.
Tip: Stay cool and dry as much as possible. Use fans or take breaks indoors if you’re getting too sweaty.
5. Carbon Dioxide
Your exhaled breath is a big draw for mosquitoes. They’re attracted to the carbon dioxide we exhale, and can detect it from 200 yards away. If you’re in a group, it’s like ringing the dinner bell.
Tip: While you can’t stop breathing (for obvious reasons), try to stay in well-ventilated areas to disperse the carbon dioxide.
6. Body Heat
Mosquitoes have infrared sensors that detect warmth. If you're warm-blooded (and unless you’re a reptile, you are), you’re on their radar.
Tip: Cool yourself down with a cold drink or take a dip in the pool. Look at it as an excuse for a refreshing break!
7. Lactic Acid
This acid is produced after exercise or eating foods high in salt or potassium. So, enjoying pretzels and bananas outside is basically advertising yourself as open for business.
Tip: Avoid heavy exercise or certain foods right before going outdoors. Maybe save that workout for the early morning or evening when mosquitoes are less active.
8. Urine
Believe it or not, your urine can attract mosquitoes. So, handling this delicate matter closer to your camp area isn't the best idea.
Tip: Answer nature’s call away from where you’re hanging out. Nature will appreciate the distance.
Remember, being conscious of these natural attractions can help you avoid mosquito bites. But hey, if all else fails, just remember: maybe mosquitoes think you’re just really sweet!
